I offer affordable services for aspiring and published authors in the form of beta reading, editing, proofreading, and sensitivity reading.  I can only take on a few commissions at a time, so please check below if I have any open slots.

Beta-reading

Beta-readers are an invaluable resource for those seeking an outside perspective on their manuscript and act as the first look into how readers might receive the text. Depending its the length, this process may take from a few days to a month. A more detailed estimate will be included when I contact you back.

Upon receiving your manuscript, I will read through it at least once and give general feedback/advice regarding

• Plot

• Themes

• Characters

• Setting

• Prose

• Pacing

• Quality.

I can provide a more detailed look into each chapter for an extra charge of $10.

Sensitivity reading

Sensitivity readers are a great step to include in the creation of all pieces of fiction, but especially important for works that may touch on sensitive topics such as race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and mental health. The task of a sensitivity reader is not to edit out or try to censor these topics, but to make sure they are handled with the necessary respect and care. As a sensitivity reader, I will read through your manuscript and look for any offensive content, stereotypes and biases readers might find issue with. I will also suggest changes, ensuring that your manuscript will have a better chance at being picked up by publishers.

Proofreading

Proofreading is suitable for a nearly finished manuscript or right before publishing. I will read through your manuscript and fix the remaining typos/errors on the surface level, but will not delve further into the story.

Editing

Depending on your needs, I can provide

• Copy or line editing: a detailed edit on your manuscript, which will focus on spelling, grammar, punctuation, word choice, and quality

• Developmental or structural editing: a broader look at the content, flow, style, tone, and general quality. I will leave comments about any issues I notice and and suggestions on how to fix them.

 

If you are unsure about the differences between these editing processes, I recommend researching them so you can be sure which option is most suitable for your manuscript. As a general sure, developmental and structural editing are most useful in the early stages of writing, so you can catch any issues about the overall structure and content early on. Copy and line editing focus more thoroughly on the prose, and are most useful at the last stages of the writing process.

As editing is a more hands-on, laborious and time-consuming task compared to proofreading for example, its rates are also much higher. However, I try to provide these services at an affordable price even for those with a lower budget.
